VDA Seminar — "Conquering Debt: A Shared Mission" | Chicago, IL · May 19, 2026
Empowering Chicago's Veterans on the Path to Financial Wellness
On May 19, Veteran Debt Assistance proudly opened its doors to veterans from Chicago's vibrant Humboldt Park and Logan Square communities for a powerful and deeply personal conversation about debt and financial wellness—one that proved no veteran has to face these challenges alone.
In a show of genuine community partnership, 36th Ward Alderman Gil Villegas hosted this intimate yet impactful gathering at his Belmont Cragin Office, joining forces with American Legion Post SSG Jason Vazquez #939 and its dedicated commander, Marcos Torres. Together, they created something special: a welcoming, judgment-free space where veterans could speak openly and honestly about the financial burdens so many carry in silence.
That sense of trust was no accident. As a retired U.S. Marine and the founder and chairman of the Chicago City Council Veteran Caucus, Alderman Villegas knows the unique struggles veterans face—because he has lived them. His authentic leadership set the tone for an evening rooted in empathy, solidarity, and real support.
The heart of the event was a compelling presentation titled "Conquering Debt: A Shared Mission," led by two distinguished veterans who have answered the call to serve once again—this time on the financial front. Angel Torres (U.S. Navy Chief Warrant Officer, Retired) and Steve Parker (U.S. Army Colonel, Retired) spoke candidly about the often-hidden emotional weight of debt: the shame, the denial, and the isolation that can take hold. Their honest, courageous dialogue reminded everyone in the room of a vital truth—that community, education, and support are powerful tools in turning the tide.
Veterans walked away with far more than information. They left with renewed hope, newfound confidence, and practical, actionable strategies to take charge of their financial future. It was a memorable evening of connection, empowerment, and shared purpose—and just one example of the meaningful work happening to support those who served. We invite you to learn more about this seminar and discover how you, too, can be part of the mission.
